Niki Toney is a Filipino-American artist who grew up internationally and spent most of her formative years in Hanoi, Vietnam, and Laguna, Philippines. She currently resides in Vallejo, California. Niki graduated from the Academy of Art University (AAU) in 2011 with a degree in illustration, and a medium focus of silkscreen printing.
Since graduating, Niki has shown her work in various art shows/galleries throughout California and has illustrated for companies such as Vox (Eater), LA Times, the US Department of State and Mosa Mack. Her skillset has recently lent itself well to Middle School illustration work, particularly work that is used for educational purposes.
Niki has recently made a dramatic pivot from illustration work to the world of fine art. A response to the ever-incroaching loom of AI, Niki has made her way back to work that connects her with her Filipino heritage and takes her away from the digital screen. She is also getting her feet wet in art show planning, which is filling her cup and exciting her about community outreach.
Niki is also in the beginning stages of writing and illustrating her own graphic novel, which is a BIPOC and LGBTQ period piece geared towards the YA reader. She loves incorporating her Filipino heritage into her work, and this graphic novel will pay tribute to her Filipino roots.
In her (rare occurance of) free time, Niki can be found in her backyard with her fur-babies Delilah, Archie, Daisy, + Mr. Chili Peppers. She also loves to travel the world with her husband, Jason Toney. They enjoy eating exciting new foods, sight-seeing and plein air painting together, and they hashtag their painting adventures, #jasonandnikipainttheworld on Instagram. She is also growing her firstborn, Bianca, who is due December 2024.
